The connection of a Wind Turbine Generator to the utilities grid to supply power is an electrically unique system with dynamic change of parameters. The wind speed influences the generator characteristics which in turn respond to the grid requirements and vice versa. |
The generator supplies kW energy when the wind speeds so permit but at the threshold or below it, it draws reactive energy from the grid practically running as a motor. When supplying KW energy into the grid as well, the magnetic circuit of the generator often times demands reactive energy (kVAr) support i.e. an apparently anomalous situation appears where active energy is exported but reactive energy is imported. |
The above behaviour of the integrated generator grid combine needs a bi-directionally enabled power factor measurement and reactive energy injection system which will monitor the electrical transactions of kW – kVAr in all the four quadrants and deliver optimum reactive energy to unburden the grid on one hand and to neutralize the kVAr requirement of the generator when in motor mode. |
The Datar Wind Master incorporates linear as well as cyclic logic to measure and control the bi-directional transactions of the generator grid combine and co-ordinates accurately the injection of reactive power. |
The measurements of all relevant electrical parameters are carried out on a real time basis by the FFT method as well as conventional method by simple time integration. The kVArh recorded on the import / export scale is separately accumulated / neutralized depending upon the historical performance on a settable scale of 1 to 255 Sec. This ensures that the accumulated kVArh deficit / excess is never beyond 17.70 kVArh at any given point of time. The software ensures that all the Banks of capacitors are equitably utilized while choosing the combination on cycle to cycle basis. Care is also taken to ensure that the power factor fluctuations do not exceed + 0.9 at any stage. |
The controller and the measurement module employ high speed data acquisition and analysis hardware and software. The software for the controller is proprietary to Datar. The software has various interlocks to ensure utmost safety and invokes error sub-routines in case of faults which need attention. |
The controller, the software and the power electronics hardware are all synchronized using special procedures and when used within prescribed parameters deliver optimum performances. |
